Dear friends of piano music, anti-cyclical behavior is supposedly intelligent. So we went on our honeymoon to Italy a few years ago - in August. Italy is always incredibly beautiful, even if you almost perish from the heat. In Milan we would almost have starved to death, because all restaurants and almost all supermarkets were closed. Why should they have opened, except for us nobody was there ...... We were saved by a well-known fast-food chain, where we consequently had to eat our meals every day - an interesting experience. It is well known that taste can be argued, and that is exactly what I have to do now. It starts out harmlessly, and then it may get really nasty, but unfortunately I can't help it. At first I was surprised by the consistency of the whole thing - it looked like a kind of sandwich, but had a "mouthfeeling" like a pudding. The taste was unobtrusive, indefinable, not unpleasant, somehow a bit sweet. But then came the shock: the so-called burger had su

Dear friends of piano music, on that day a myth died for me - the Salzburg Festival. From early childhood I had imagined what a significant and overwhelming event it had to be - festivals, sacred sounds in sacred halls, played by the gods of music. Additionally there was this city - Salzburg, the city of Mozart, it had to be a shimmering place of almost unearthly beauty. And then that. It was a couple of years ago and, as far as I can remember, Austria was almost completely under water. The sky had really opened all the locks, and after we had made it into the underground car park by car, I wondered whether it would be completely flooded when we returned. A city tour was out of the question, at most with armbands and diving goggles. To make matters worse, I'd bravely decided to put on a pink sequined suit, and when I wasn't thinking about the flood, I kept wondering whether that choice of clothes was wise or whether I just looked like Miss Piggy from Sesame Street. In any cas

Dear friends of piano music, I have noticed that I write about my grandma quite a lot. She was a very clever and brave woman, wise to live and with an educated heart. Otherwise she was completely uneducated, because I come from Prussian farmers, and all that counted was practical skills, bravery and punctuality. Anyone who, like my grandmother, wore glasses - my ancestors were blind as a mole, like me - was forbidden to read books in order not to endanger their poor eyesight. That is why I mostly remember very short, concise and very true sentences from my grandmother, such as: After the war there weren't that many men - on the subject of choosing a partner. At that time, however, the following sentence was almost even more shocking: You used to marry a farm. Where's the love in that, I thought. This pure pragmatism struck me as cruel. But of course it made sense - in my family too. After losing his farm in what is now Poland, my grandpa married my grandma, the court heiress in

Dear friends of piano music, " That's totally broken," said a friend of my mother's when she was visiting Heidelberg Castle, full of disappointment. Yes, the Heidelberg Castle is actually largely a ruin, and as such a symbol of romanticis., The romantics especially loved ruins as an expression of longing for a bygone era. My son would also like to rebuild it, he has dealt intensively with the history of the building, and it was actually very beautiful in its heyday when it was intact and inhabited, but that would deconstruct a romantic myth for which Heidelberg is world famous . But what is it really like to live in Heidelberg? Well, we don't live in the historic old town, which outside of pandemic times is actually firmly in the hands of tourists from all over the world on the one hand and students on the other. There is always flooding there when the Neckar's river bed becomes too narrow, the alleys are sometimes very narrow, the baroque houses small, at le
